West Nile Virus Risk to August 16 2007
West Nile Virus Risk Summary
SHR preliminary data shows 26 cases of WNVto date including 8 hospitalized cases. Cases range in age from 15 to 65. Continued positive pools have been identified in all SHR traps. The odds of getting bitten by an infected mosquito are higher now than at any other time of the year. While public perception is that there are "no mosquiotes out there," Culex tarsalis is at large. Less obvious than the "nuisance mosquitoes" that more noticable, Culex tarsalis is a surreptitious feeder, most active in the evenings, though the night and around dawn and will readily enter houses (trailers, tents). There are sufficient numbers of infected adult female Culex tarsalis to make the risk high during warmer evenings until the end of August. The risk is general throughout Saskatchewan. About 90% of total mosquitoes caught in the traps are Culex tarsalis
For total cases in Saskatchewan see http://www.health.gov.sk.ca/wnv-surveillance-results Nationally WNV has been making headlines with predictions for infections to hit record highs. Most of the activity has been concentrated in the three Prairie provinces, with Manitoba leading. There has been one death in a Manitoba cases this year. To the south of our borders North Dakota is reporting 83 cases, of which 17 (20%) have been hospitalized.
The risk of WNV transmission very high and will remain so for the next few weeks inspite of cooler temperatures. Personal protective measures (see below) are highly recommended.

West Nile Virus Risk Summary Week 29, ending July 21st
We are entering the highest seasonal risk period for transmission for WNV. Warm humid conditions hasten the development of Culex tarsalis and the incubation period for the virus shortens as the mosquito metabolism increases. High numbers and proportions of CDC traps in the Saskatoon area are Culex tarsalis and there have been two positive pools to date, indicating the virus is present in the mosquito population. At this time last year 6 % (386/6041) of CDC traps contained Culex tarsalis mosquitoes compared to 66% (3515/5288) this year!
Three human cases were reported this week in Regina and Yorkton. Numbers and proportions continue to increase in Estevan, Outlook, Broderick and Weyburn. Sun Country now has 17 positive pools followed by Heartland with eight positive pools. The first confirmed positive horse case was reported from Pilot Butte.
Manitoba has 14 cases and North Dakota 25 cases including the first case of 2006 that resulted in death.
The risk of WNV transmission is high. Personal protective measures are highly recommended.
Please see http://www.saskatoonhealthregion.ca/your_health/west_nile_surveillance.htm for earlier WNV surveillance this season.
